Box Elder Bugs: What They Are, Why They Invade, and How to Keep Them Out of Your Home
You may have seen sleek black bugs with bright red or orange markings crawling on your windows, siding, or even inside your home during the cooler months. Those are box elder bugs, and while they're not as destructive as some other pests, they can quickly become a significant nuisance if left unchecked.
Let's talk about what box elder bugs are, why they suddenly appear in swarms, how to prevent an infestation, and how Barrier Pest Control can help homeowners across Aurora, Newmarket, King City, Vaughan, Maple, Nobleton, Kleinburg, Schomberg, Tottenham and Simcoe region keep these bugs (and others) out for good.
What Are Box Elder Bugs?
Box elder bugs are commonly found throughout Southern Ontario, especially in areas where box elder trees, maple trees, and ash trees grow. Adult box elder bugs are about 12-14 mm long, black with distinctive red lines on their thorax and wings. In the spring and summer, they live and breed outdoors, feeding on tree sap, leaves, and seeds—typically causing minimal tree damage.
However, it's spring when they become homeowners' problems.
As spring approaches and temperatures begin to rise, box elder bugs start to emerge from their winter hiding spots. This is when you’ll often see them gathering in large numbers on the sunny sides of homes, drawn to the warmth. They're on the hunt for cracks, gaps, and tiny openings to sneak inside and take shelter. Once indoors, they tend to cluster in attics, wall voids, basements, and around windows—turning your home into a hotspot for unwanted creepy-crawlies.
Are Box Elder Bugs Harmful?
While they don't bite, sting, or damage structures, box elder bugs can still cause plenty of headaches. Here's why:
- Stains and Smells: When crushed, box elder bugs release a foul odour and can leave behind red stains on walls, furniture, and fabrics.
- Sheer Numbers: They don't usually come in ones or twos. An infestation can involve hundreds, sometimes thousands of bugs.
- Allergies: Some people report mild allergic reactions to their droppings or shed skin.
So, while they may be considered more of a nuisance than a threat, no one wants their home turned into a bug motel—especially in the colder months when we spend more time indoors.
