Wasp vs. Hornet vs. Bee: How to Identify What's in Your Yard

If you've noticed striped insects buzzing around your yard, you're not alone. One of the most common questions we hear is, "Is that a wasp, a hornet, or a bee?"

While they may look similar at first glance, each insect behaves differently, builds different types of nests, and poses different risks. Knowing what you're dealing with can help you decide whether it's best to leave them alone or call a pest control professional.

How to Identify a Wasp

Wasps have long, slender bodies with a narrow waist and smooth, shiny appearance. They're typically bright yellow and black, although some species can have reddish or brown colouring.

Unlike bees, wasps have very little hair on their bodies, making them appear sleek. They're also predators, feeding on insects as well as sugary foods and drinks.

Common places you'll find wasp nests include:

  • Under roof eaves
  • Decks and railings
  • Sheds and garages
  • Trees and shrubs
  • Children's play equipment

Wasps can become aggressive when they feel their nest is threatened and are capable of stinging multiple times.

How to Identify a Hornet

Hornets are actually a type of wasp, but they're generally much larger and more robust in appearance.

In Ontario, the most commonly encountered hornet is the bald-faced hornet, which has distinctive black and white markings rather than the familiar yellow and black colouring many people expect. The white stripes can also appear as a very faint yellow.

Hornets typically build large, football-shaped paper nests that hang from trees, bushes, or the sides of buildings.

Because hornets defend their nests aggressively, it's important to avoid getting too close if you discover one on your property.

How to Identify a Bee

Bees are easy to distinguish once you know what to look for. Their bodies are rounder and much fuzzier than wasps or hornets.

That fuzzy appearance helps them collect pollen, making them some of our most important pollinators. Without bees, many of the fruits, vegetables, and flowers we enjoy wouldn't thrive.

Most bees are not aggressive and will only sting if they're handled, trapped, or feel threatened.

If you notice bees visiting flowers around your yard, they're usually best left alone.

Why Proper Identification Matters

Correctly identifying the insect is important because the right solution depends on the species.

A wasp nest under your deck may require professional treatment, while a few bees pollinating your garden are actually benefiting your landscape.

Hornet nests should also be handled with caution due to the size of the colony and their defensive behaviour.

Attempting to remove an active nest without the proper equipment can increase the risk of multiple stings.

When Should You Call a Professional?

If you've found a nest near your home, playground, deck, patio, or another area where people regularly spend time, it's a good idea to have it inspected.

At Barrier Pest Control, we can identify the species, determine whether treatment is necessary, and safely remove active wasp or hornet nests when needed.

If the insects you've spotted are bees, we'll also help determine the best course of action while recognizing the important role they play in our environment.
